The various aliens and hospital environments allow for all kinds of room for background gags, Easter eggs, and references, and here are 15 elements that you may have missed.
14 The Cinnamon Bunnies
Episode 1
While in the minds of one of her patients, Dr. Vlam sees all kinds of unique things, including a creature known as a cinnamon bunny. The aptly-named animal is simply a rabbit-like creature who is made out of cinnamon. However, the cinnamon bunnies are last seen when one of the bunnies takes a bite out of the other one, ending the joke on a morbid note.
13 Klak's Mental Notes
Episode 2
Close
Since Klak's mental health is a major topic in The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy, episode 2 decided to visualize her thoughts by putting Klak's mental notes on the screen. While some of them do have to do with the story, some of Klak's smaller notes are just gags, with her being worried about being left on read and asking the question "Why be a zelch if you can be a xlorm?"
12 Klak & Sleech's Chore Chart
Episode 3
The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy episode 3 is the TV show's time travel episode, with it starting with a flashback to Klak and Sleech's time in college. A chore chart is hung on the wall of the duo's dorm room, and while it is filled with illegible words, there is an even more hidden gag. The chore chart divides the chores between Klak and Sleech, with it showing that Klak has done almost all the chores while Sleech has barely done any. Not only is this a great background gag, but it is also a solid character-building moment.
11 Klak & Sleech's College Dorm Posters
Episode 3
The chore chart isn't the only hidden gag in Klak and Sleech's college dorm room, as it also has some parody posters. A poster reading "Tropolis" is hung above Sleech's bed, with it clearly being a parody of the hit sci-fi film Metropolis. A poster for a band called "The Ploobs" can also be seen in the bathroom, with the poster using the same font as the real-world band The Doors.
10 Episode 3's Murder Mystery
Episode 3
Upon discovering that the loop chip can allow them to experiment on Larvin, Klak and Sleech run some tests, with the anxiety-powered worm revealing that one of their test subjects actually murdered another person. To viewers paying attention, a background newcast earlier in the episode talked about a missing woman, with this gag resolving the background murder mystery.
9 The Loop Chip Bus
Episode 3
The Loop Chip is a dangerous time travel device that allows its users to be saved from death, with it being the main plot point in episode 3. At the end of the episode, the loop chip's main investor is hit by a bus and killed. Ironically, the bus has an advertisement for loop chips on its side, meaning that the loop chip took a life rather than saving one.
8 Klak's Brother
Episode 4
The opening of The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy episode 4 features a montage that shows the spread of an STD, with the montage featuring various characters performing sex acts on one another. A motif throughout this montage is collages of the characters participating in sexual activity. However, one of these collages features Klak's brother randomly eating a chocolate bar in the bottom corner, with this being a humorous non-sequitur.
7 A Hidden Star Wars Reference
Episode 4
Like all good sci-fi shows, The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy found a way to sneak in a reference to Star Wars. One episode features a scene in which two robots are fighting. Eagle-eyed viewers may have actually spotted the hidden Star Wars Easter egg, as an R2-D2 can be seen on a shelf in the background.
6 The Elevated Falls Sign
Episode 4
Episode 4 of The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy also features a fancy shell facility, although only a few details are known about the building. However, when the characters exit the facility, a sign for the business can be seen reading "Elevated Falls — Open to all who can afford serenity."
5 Foreshadowing St. Cthonk
Episode 4
While leaving the shell facility, several billboards are seen, with one proclaiming that a person named St. Cthonk is still alive. A few episodes later, it is revealed that a holiday figure named St. Cthonk is actually alive, with a group of Cthonk conspiracy theorists being right. This is a great gag in retrospect, as it foreshadows a major The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy storyline.
4 Uranusology
Episode 5
The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy features all kinds of wacky medical fields, with the characters dropping all kinds of unique sci-fi medical procedures. However, one of the best is a sign that appears in episode 5 that talks about Uranusology. Uranus jokes are some of the most obvious gags for a sci-fi series to use, but it actually works in the Amazon show.
3 Immortal Wombat
Episode 6
Close
Plenty of animated comedies feature weird parodies of video games, and The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy is no exception. One scene features a video game franchise titled Immortal Wombat, with this clearly being a parody of the video game and movie series Mortal Kombat.
2 The Hoof Polisher
Episode 7
The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy episode 7 revolves around a self-help TV show, with the episode cutting away at various points to see viewers watching the program. One of these cutaways features the patient that was seen in episode 1, with her having two vibrating machines on her feet. These are actually the hoof polishers that are referenced back in episode 1, bringing things full circle.
1 The Worm's Origin Story
Episode 8
Larvin the Worm is the main antagonist of The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy, but his origin story isn't revealed until the season 1 finale. It is explained that Larvin is the final member of a species of parasitic worms, with his parent sending him away as a baby in a spacecraft right before their home planet exploded. This is a clear reference to Superman's origin story, with it being a major plot point in The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy.
