Warning: contains potential spoilers for The Resurrection of Magneto #2!

Magneto has revealed the origin of his darkest weapon: “the key to judgment and purification.” Although the Master of Magnetism’s powers make him one of Marvel’s most powerful mutants, he has other tricks at his disposal, and in a preview for The Resurrection of Magneto #2, fans learn he possesses an extremely powerful weapon, one that could turn the tide in the battle against Orchis.

Marvel shared a sneak preview of The Resurrection of Magneto #2 with AIPT. The book, which will be written by Al Ewing and drawn by Luciano Vecchio, opens with a flashback to an adventure Magneto shared with Namor the Sub-Mariner, one that ends with Magneto obtaining a special key. The key’s keeper refers to it as “the door to judgment and purification.” Magneto asks if it is the door out or the door in, to which the being replies: “turn it and see.”

In the present, Magneto still refuses to turn the key, but his resistance seems to be waning.

But How Powerful Is This Weapon?

This special key could be crucial to a mutant victory against Orchis. The fascist, anti-mutant organization recently attacked Krakoa, killing many mutants and scattering more around the planet. Not content to stop there, Orchis has implemented oppressive measures against the surviving mutants. In the year before this attack went down, Magneto was seemingly killed, and opted not to be resurrected. However, with the chips down, Storm has realized Earth’s mutants need someone like Magneto leading the charge, so she has taken it upon herself to bring him back to the land of the living.

And there is a good chance that Magneto may return with the key (literally) to defeating Orchis. The preview ends before fans can get a chance to witness the mysterious key in action, but its previous caretaker implied its power is great. What the caretaker meant by the key opening the door to purification and judgment is not explained either. Orchis’ attack on Krakoa has stirred a righteous anger and fury in Earth’s mutants, and if Magneto does turn the key, could tip the battle with Orchis in their favor and end it once and for all.

What Drawbacks Does This Key Have?

However, the biggest stumbling block to using the key is Magneto himself. In the preview, Magneto is aware the key possesses great power, yet he is unwilling to use it. The preview does not say how long Magneto has had it, but it is implied a number of years. Magneto had the key all this time, but has never used it, which is surprising considering the situations he has found himself in that could have potentially benefitted from the key. Magneto’s reluctance to use his most powerful weapon may be coming to an end, which could spell doom for Orchis.
