As the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise enters a new era, writer Jason Aaron has confirmed he's aiming for an Earth-shaking crossover with the Godzilla franchise. However, far from a pipe dream project, this is one reptilian project fans will almost certainly see come to fruition.

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Aaron spoke about what fans can expect when he takes over IDW's TMNT series in July 2024. Asked if there are any plans for intercompany crossovers, Aaron asks, "Has there been a Turtles/Godzilla book? Has that happened yet? … Well, there we go. Let's make that one happen."

Many writers have ideal projects they want to write, but a Turtles/Godzilla project is totally feasible thanks to the recent history of both franchises. It would fit into IDW's new relaunch of its TMNT series with Aaron, which will kick off in July 2024, with a first arc where Aaron gives each of the individual heroes their own issue alongside a different artist, with Joëlle Jones on Raphael, Rafael Albuquerque on Michelangelo in August, Cliff Chiang on Leonardo in September, and Chris Burnham on Donatello in October. The first glimpse of Aaron's era will be in Free Comic Book Day 2024: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1, coming May 4.

It's clear that both properties are open to comic crossovers and already have narrative links thanks to their separate Power Rangers crossovers.

Current Crossover Series Prove It's Totally Possible — & Maybe Even Likely

Close

While some crossovers are too ambitious to ever happen, a TMNT/Godzilla project isn't one of them. Currently, DC is publishing Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong (Brian Buccellato and Christian Duce), while the Turtles have an exhaustive history of comic crossovers. The most recent of these was Mighty Morphin Power Rangers / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II, which gave the Turtles their own Ranger forms. Given that the Rangers are getting their second team-up with the atomic kaiju in April's Godzilla vs. the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers II (Cullen Bunn and Baldemar Rivas), it's clear that all of these properties are open to comic crossovers, and already have narrative links as part of a larger crossover 'multiverse.'

Indeed, the Turtles have exhaustive crossover experience, starring in series with the Ghostbusters, Batman, Savage Dragon, the Power Rangers, Archie, The X-Files, and even Garfield. And those were just the official series, with the TMNT getting a sneaky cameo in the background of a Sonic the Hedgehog comic and starring in a sadly canceled He-Man crossover. If there's a larger comic multiverse, then the Turtles are its ultimate tourists, so a visit to the MonsterVerse doesn't just make sense according to how the characters' comics rights are being applied, but with their own reality-hopping history and lore. In fact, with the Power Rangers/Godzilla crossover getting a second incarnation and the TMNT/Power Rangers crossover due for a third installment, few things could be cooler than combining the two into a jaw-dropping TMNT/Power Rangers/Godzilla entry to close out both trilogies at once.

Jason Aaron is a major name in comics, and is fresh off a years-long Avengers run while currently penning Batman: Off-World for DC Comics. If anyone has the star power to push past the red tape and make a dream Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles vs Godzilla project happen, it's Aaron, although current trends actually suggest he wouldn't meet much resistance getting the crossover off the ground.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 will be available July 2024 from IDW Publishing, following May 4's Free Comic Book Day 2024: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1.
