  • Luke is preparing to face Darth Vader in a future confrontation as seen in Return of the Jedi
  • Healing a corrupted kyber crystal tests Luke's ability to bring one from darkness back to the light.
  • Luke's vision confirms Anakin's goodness still exists, a key moment in the Star Wars canon inspiring him to believe in Vader's redemption.

Star Wars has revealed the critical moment when Luke Skywalker knew he would be able to redeem his father from the dark side of the Force. Luke never met the man Darth Vader had once been before his corruption to the dark side. However, a key vision in the Force revealed to Luke the potential good of Anakin Skywalker that still remained within his father.

Set between the events of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Luke has been growing in his powers and knowledge as a Jedi, and this includes his attempt to purify a piece of red Sith kyber crystal he was given during this era. Luke's work to heal this darkened kyber results in the Jedi facing his own darkness as well as his father's in the new Star Wars #43 from Charles Soule, Steven Cummings, and Jethro Morales. However, Luke also sees the good of Anakin Skywalker that can still be found as well.

Knowing very little about Anakin Skywalker, all Luke can see is the glowing outline of his father that's emerged from the vision of Darth Vader he'd just been dueling in this new issue. Understanding that the good can still be found and the darkness redeemed, Luke is now determined to try and save his father, especially after this unique experience through the Force.

Luke Knows He'll Have To Fight The Real Darth Vader

It's Only A Matter Of Time

"Healing this corrupted kyber was an important test to see if Luke could indeed bring something (or someone) in darkness back to the light."

Luke also confirms that he soon have to face Darth Vader again in the Star Wars timeline. Since their duel on Cloud City as seen in Empire Strikes Back, Luke and Vader have only had one encounter with each other during the War of the Bounty Hunters event where they had a brief dogfight with their respective starfighters. However, Luke left their conflict after neutralizing Vader's TIE Advanced, knowing that he wasn't yet ready for a full-on confrontation with his father.

However, Luke's Jedi path has progressed by leaps and bounds since his last encounter with Vader. He's since found ancient Jedi texts, holocrons, and allies like the Fallanassi in this new issue who have helped him learn and do more with his abilities. To that end, healing this corrupted kyber was an important test to see if Luke could bring something (or someone) in darkness back to the light. Following his success by the issue's end, Skywalker finally seems ready to meet his destiny and face Vader in Return of the Jedi (just as soon as Luke builds his green lightsaber).

Luke's Force vision in this new issue is incredibly exciting. It's a definitive moment in the Star Wars canon in which Luke fully sees that Vader still has good within him, and that his father could ultimately be redeemed. As such, this moment massively informs the near future with Return of the Jedi and Luke's resolve to bring his father back, regardless of Obi-Wan and Yoda's beliefs that the path of the dark side couldn't be left and that Vader was too far gone: "No one is beyond help."
