How Does Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Compare With The Previous Iterations?
The new show blows the M. Night Shyamalan adaptation out of the water
Close
During the development of Avatar: The Last Airbender’s live-action show, viewers of the series had one huge fear: that the Netflix show would repeat the same wrongs as M. Night Shyamalan’s abysmal 2010 adaptation effort, The Last Airbender. In contrast to the Netflix show, The Last Airbender has a rotten 5% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score is only slightly higher, at a still-bad 30% approval rating.
While it looks like Netflix’s Avatar has not plummeted to the same nadir as did The Last Airbender, its reviews are nowhere near the heights of the original animated series. Nickelodeon’s animated series holds a perfect 100% among critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and a near-perfect 98% among viewers. It remains one of the most beloved series of all time, holding the #7 slot on the IMDb top 250 for TV.
All eight episodes of the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender season 1 are now available to stream on Netflix.
The 59% score for the Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action reviews may not be as high as viewers would have hoped. Some critics have noted how the series changes aspects of the original series, and other detractors have criticized some of the performances. Even with some significant shortcomings, Netflix’s show has successfully avoided the critical atrocity that was The Last Airbender.
What Does This Mean for Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2?
The show only has one season confirmed at Netflix
The original Avatar: The Last Airbender is structured into three seasons, or “books,” that each represent one of the elements Aang must master: Water, Earth, and Fire. Ideally, the live-action show would follow the same structure, condensing the original's 20-episode seasons (at about 22 minutes per episode) into three roughly eight-episode seasons, wherein episodes are between 45 minutes and one hour. As of yet, however, Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender has only had one season confirmed.
A Rotten Tomatoes score of 59% puts the show just under the threshold of being Rotten, putting its season 2 hopes into doubt. The 75% audience approval is a good sign for Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2, however, as the audience’s enjoyment of the show will hopefully lead to high viewership numbers for Netflix. Getting a sophomore season would give the show a chance to redeem itself and further use some of the series’ most iconic characters, such as Azula and Toph. Hopefully, mixed initial reviews will not quash Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2's potential.
