HBO has reliably cleaned up at awards shows for their hit dramas over the past several decades, with the 2024 SAG Awards giving the company a significant category win for the first time since Game of Thrones’ conclusion in 2019. Game of Thrones remains one of the most awarded and recognized TV shows of all time, with the cast, direction, writing, stunt work, visuals, and status as an outstanding drama earning it numerous accolades for HBO throughout the 2010s. However, following Game of Thrones’ ending, HBO lost its reign over a specific SAG Awards category.

While Succession took over as HBO’s leading show for awards season clean-up, there’s one category for which the series reasonably failed to receive any nominations. The SAG Awards excitingly recognize movies and TV shows for their stunt work, an important part of the entertainment industry and the success of a project. With the huge action set pieces, battles, and dragon-riding in Game of Thrones, it’s not surprising that the HBO series won the SAG Award in this category on eight occasions. Now, five years after Game of Thrones’ finale, HBO finally has another winner in the stunt category.

The Last Of Us Is The First Time HBO Has Won Best Stunt Ensemble Since Game Of Thrones

At Netflix's revolutionary 2024 SAG Awards, HBO’s The Last of Us was announced as the winner for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series. This win brought an end to a five-year drought in the category for HBO, which is even more impressive given the action-heavy TV shows The Last of Us was up against &- Pedro Pascal’s own The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, Barry, and Beef. Additionally, The Last of Us finally bringing back this SAG Award win for HBO reveals that the hit Pedro Pascal-starring series is its new action replacement for Game of Thrones.

Considering Game of Thrones won the Stunt Ensemble SAG Award seven consecutive years and eight times total, The Last of Us’ awards success means it could also go on a similar streak. Though it’s unlikely that The Last of Us will extend beyond three or four seasons, it’s possible that the HBO drama could continue to win in the stunt category for the next few years. However, with the last three category winners between Game of Thrones and The Last of Us being The Mandalorian, Squid Game, and Stranger Things, which are all still ongoing shows, HBO still has stiff competition at future ceremonies.

The Last of Us and Game of Thrones are both available to stream on Max.
